IELTS Writing Task 1 How to Describe Process Diagrams

IELTS Writing Task 1 requires you to describe a process diagram or a graph in written form. The process diagrams in IELTS Writing Task 1 are usually technical and complex, but with the right approach, you can effectively communicate the information in the diagram. Here are some tips to help you describe process diagrams in IELTS Writing Task 1.

  • Identify the main stages of the process

The first step in describing process diagrams is to identify the main stages of the process. This will help you understand the flow of the process and make it easier to describe. Look for arrows and labels in the diagram to help you understand the flow of the process.

  • Use simple language

The IELTS examiners are looking for your ability to use simple and clear language to describe complex information. Use simple, concise sentences and avoid technical terms unless necessary. Use vocabulary that you are familiar with, and try to avoid long, complex sentences.

  • Follow the order of the process

When describing the process, make sure to follow the order of the process as shown in the diagram. Start by introducing the process, and then describe each stage of the process in detail. Make sure to include key information such as inputs, outputs, and any intermediate stages.

  • Use time phrases

When describing a process, it is important to include time phrases to show the progression of the process. Use phrases like “first,” “second,” “then,” and “finally” to show the order of the stages in the process.

  • Pay attention to the verb tense

In IELTS Writing Task 1, you are required to use the present simple tense to describe processes. For example, “The raw material is transported to the factory” instead of “The raw material was transported to the factory”.

  • Use linking words

Finally, use linking words to connect the different stages of the process and to make your writing more cohesive. Words such as “and,” “afterward,” “then,” and “finally” can help you link different stages of the process together.

Sample Process Diagram Question:

The diagrams below show the stages and equipment used in the cement-making process, and how cement is used to produce concrete for building purposes. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. (Note: This process diagram is taken from Cambridge IELTS 8).

Sample answer:

The diagram illustrates how cement is manufactured, while the one on the right shows the use of that cement in the production of concrete for construction.

Overall, there are four main steps in the manufacture of cement: crushing the raw materials and mixing them, heating them, and then grinding the result into a fine powder. To make concrete, cement is mixed proportionally with other ingredients.

First of all, the two raw materials, limestone, and clay, are fed into a crusher which breaks them down into a powder. After being blended in a mixer, the powder is burned at high temperatures in a rotating heater. It is then ground in a grinder and the resulting fine powder is cement, which is subsequently sent for packaging.

To produce strong and durable concrete for building purposes, cement is combined in a concrete mixer with other ingredients in fixed proportions: 15% cement, 25% sand, 50% gravel, and 10% water. As the cement becomes hydrated, it binds the sand and gravel to form concrete.

Conclusion

In conclusion, when describing process diagrams in IELTS Writing Task 1, it is important to use simple language, follow the order of the process, use time phrases, pay attention to verb tense, and use linking words. With practice and these tips, you’ll be able to effectively describe process diagrams in the IELTS exam.
